Fea Simulation of the Shape Memory Effect of an Sma Ribbon Embedded in Epoxy

چکیده
This study comprises finite element simulations and experimental studies of the shape memory effect due to the presence of SMA (shape memory alloy) wires in composite materials. FEA was performed using ANSYS, where the prestrain was modelled by equivalent changes in the expansion coefficient of the SMA. Three case-studies were simulated and their predictions were compared with experimental data: (a) the heating of a prestrained SMA ribbon in epoxy; (b) the heating of a 4 ply 0/90/0/90 fibre composite (without SMA wires), which causes deflection due to the difference in the expansion coefficients of matrix and fibres and (c) the heating of a 4 ply 0/90/0/90 fibre composite with SMA wires, which included the synergy of the shape memory effects of the matrix/fibre system and SMA wires.

In situ displacement measurements and numerical predictions of embedded SMA transformation
The transformation behavior of an embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) ribbon was investigated experimentally and numerically. Single SMA ribbons (55% Ni, 45% Ti) were pre-strained to 1% and then embedded in a room-temperature-cured epoxy resin. The embedded ribbons were heated resistively to a temperature above the austenite start temperature to induce transformation. The development of displacem...

In the present article, the dynamic behavior of sandwich plates with embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires is evaluated for two cases wherein (i) the stress-strain curve of the superelastic behavior of the SMA wires is symmetric and (ii) the mentioned curve is non-symmetric. A modified version of Brinson’s constitutive model is proposed and used. The high non-linearity in the behavior stems f...

In the present research, in contrast to the available papers, not only the superelasticity but also the shape memory effects are taken into account in determination of the impact responses. At the same time, in addition to modifying Brinson’s model for the shape memory alloys (SMAs), to include new parameters and loading events, and Hertz contact law, distributions of the SMA phases are conside...

In this paper the design of a biped robot actuated with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) springs with minimum degrees of freedom is presented. SMA springs are a class of smart materials that are known for their high power to mass and volume ratios. It was shown that utilizing spring type of SMAs have many advantages as large deformation, smooth motion, silent and clean movement compared to ordinary typ...
متن کاملTransformation of Embedded Shape Memory Alloy Ribbons
Shape memory alloy (SMA) wires can be embedded in a host material to alter the stiffness or modal response and provide vibration control. The interaction between the embedded SMA and the host material is critical to applications requiring transfer of loads or strain from the wire to the host. Although there has been a significant amount of research dedicated to characterizing and modeling the r...
